美国地质调查所（USGS）网站资料显示，台湾时间16日下午2时48分左右，美国阿拉斯加州南部小镇沙角市（SandPoint）以南约98.7公里处的外海，发生了规模7.2的强震，深度约32.6公里。
路透报导，该起地震发生后，美国的海啸预警系统针对南阿拉斯加、阿拉斯加半岛和接近震央的太平洋地区，发布了海啸警报。
